Nars has some of my favourite sets ever. Last year's Christmas collection was so beautiful and I still love everything I bought. They just keep churning out quality products and put together some really well thought out collections that caters to all preferences. And the new Nars x Steven Klein collection is no exception.
I admit, I had no idea who Steven Klein was before this collection was released, but I could sort of guess that he was probably a photographer from the packaging, which I'll discuss later. Anyway, he's a seriously high profile photographer who's done some amazing work with Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. His work definitely leans towards the dark and edgy end of things, but the styling is incredible and you just cannot question the talent. So he's put together this incredible collection with Nars that sort of embodies the richness and depth of his work. And ultimately, it's stunning.
The packaging is phenomenal. Everything looks like a work of art, including the cardboard boxes it comes in. I'm terrible at throwing away the packaging of my makeup, but I didn't even make an attempt to throw these boxes away. They just went onto my shelf. The plastic packaging of the palette is really sturdy and feels like a nice high-end product, which I really enjoy.
Moving onto the products, I ended up getting two things from the collection. The A Women's Face Nude Lip Set is a collection of three permanent shades in the Nars collection. It comes with on of their lipsticks in Dolce Vita, one of their Velvet Matte Lip Pencils in Dolce Vita, and their Velvet Lip Liner in Patong Beach. They're all incredibly similar shades, which means they're all great to wear in conjunction with each other. I love the lipstick in Dolce Vita. It's a beautiful plummy pink shade that's on the sheer side. It has a nice glossy finish with a bit of a balmy feel to it, though it's not necessarily hydrating. It really is a the perfect nude lip for me, especially because I don't have much of a natural lip colour. It will look a little too sheer for someone with naturally darker lips. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is the same colour, but more pigmented and has a nice matte finish. The velvet matte lip pencils are an absolute favourite of mine and are probably some of my favourite lip products ever. Also, the lip liner is slightly warmer and a little more red than the other two, but still works really well with them. It's also insanely pigmented, and I've been getting some serious use out of this set.
One Shocking Moment is an amazing face palette with four blushes, one of the Contour Blush Duos in Paloma and their famous Laguna bronzer. The contour duo has quite a warm rosy tone to it, and is probably not suitable on anyone with super fair skin, but it works quite well on mine. The bronzer is a cult favourite, really nice and warm on the skin and really good at giving a nice sunkissed glow. The four blushes are the main reason I bought this palette. It comes with two limited edition shades, Robotic (cool-toned Barbie pink) and Blasphemy (dusty rose), and two permanent shades, Luster (pinkish-orange) and Dolce Vita (plummy pink). They're all veined with small shimmers which makes them really nice and glowy on the cheek.s I've been dying to get my hands on both Luster and Dolce Vita, and I don't own anything remotely similar to Robotic, so I thought this would be a good set to try out.
If that's up your alley, but they're just too much going on, the Despair Cheek Palette is a really nice option, with three limited edition blush shades and one of their permanent highlighting blushes. It also comes with a mini Ita brush!
I also managed to pick up the Nars Audacious mascara, which is part of their permanent collection. It is supposed to give intense volume, definition, and length to your lashes. The brush is a plastic spiky one which has quite long bristles, which I found to almost poke my eyes out. The formula of the mascara itself was a little wet and clumpy, and since I don't really have much lash to begin with, I found it quite a challenging mascara to use, and the results weren't worth the effort. It's probably a much better mascara for someone who originally has quite long lashes and who likes their lashes to look amazing, but anyone like me with tiny lash stubs, this isn't the one for you.
And that's it! Wrapping up the on longest brief review in history, I loved the Steven Klein collection. It's amazing and I don't think they're a single miss in the entire collection. The Audacious mascara is coincided with a release of their new kohl liner, which I swatched and I loved, so I may be getting my hands on that in the new future...
